    Academic libraries face a number of challenges in managing large collections of periodicals and books. Stewardship of these collections must balance the need to preserve older parts of the scholarly record with the constant space demands of the ongoing acquisitions, without also impinging upon other uses the library needs to support, including student study space. Shared preservation of print collections is one way to address these issues. Collectively, libraries may be able to more effectively preserve the scholarly record

    User-Driven Collections: Barriers to Implementation

    The philosophy of user-driven collections is completely different than that which libraries have historically employed. This difference is typically described in the literature as just in time\u27 versus \u27just in case\u27 collection development. In a time when it was slow and laborious to have library materials delivered, it made sense to have as much material stored on site, just in case someone wanted it, rather than having to wait for it to arrive after ordering. \u27Just in time\u27 was never soon enough. Libraries of all sizes (and their users) have lived by the just-in-case philosophy for many years. It is understandable that both library staff and users will feel alienated by a change in collection philosophy. This is the greatest barrier to implementing a user-drive collection model.\u2

    Comparative genome analysis of Wolbachia strain wAu

    BACKGROUND: Wolbachia intracellular bacteria can manipulate the reproduction of their arthropod hosts, including inducing sterility between populations known as cytoplasmic incompatibility (CI). Certain strains have been identified that are unable to induce or rescue CI, including wAu from Drosophila. Genome sequencing and comparison with CI-inducing related strain wMel was undertaken in order to better understand the molecular basis of the phenotype. RESULTS: Although the genomes were broadly similar, several rearrangements were identified, particularly in the prophage regions. Many orthologous genes contained single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) between the two strains, but a subset containing major differences that would likely cause inactivation in wAu were identified, including the absence of the wMel ortholog of a gene recently identified as a CI candidate in a proteomic study. The comparative analyses also focused on a family of transcriptional regulator genes implicated in CI in previous work, and revealed numerous differences between the strains, including those that would have major effects on predicted function. CONCLUSIONS: The study provides support for existing candidates and novel genes that may be involved in CI, and provides a basis for further functional studies to examine the molecular basis of the phenotype

    Suppose a spacetime MM is a quotient of a spacetime VV by a discrete group of isometries. It is shown how causality conditions in the two spacetimes are related, and how can one learn about the future causal boundary on MM by studying structures in VV. The relations between the two are particularly simple (the boundary of the quotient is the quotient of the boundary) if both VV and MM have spacelike future boundaries and if it is known that the quotient of the future completion of VV is past-distinguishing.     The \u3ci\u3eAspergillus nidulans snt\u3c/i\u3e Genes Are Required for the Regulation of Septum Formation and Cell Cycle Checkpoints

    In Aspergillus nidulans, germinating conidia undergo multiple rounds of nuclear division before forming a septum. Previous genetic results suggest that the ability to separate nuclear division and septum formation depends upon a threshold level of activity of the cyclin-dependent kinase NIMXcdk1. Mutations in nimX and nimT, the gene encoding the NIMXcdk1-activating phosphatase, have revealed that Tyr-15 phosphorylation is important for determining the timing of the formation of the first septum. Here, we describe a screen for suppressors of nimT23 (snt), designed to identify additional components of the pathway regulating septum formation. We show that a subset of the snt mutants are defective in the temporal regulation of septum formation and in cell cycle checkpoint responses. Molecular characterization of sntA shows that it is allelic to the previously described ankA gene, which encodes the NIMXcdk1 Tyr-15 kinase. Additional experiments described in this study show that nutritional conditions modulate the timing of septum formation and alter the phenotypes displayed by the snt mutants. A model that suggests that the timing of septum formation is influenced by DNA damage and glucose availability via the sntA and sntB gene products is proposed

    Attitudes and Beliefs of Marriage and Family Therapists Regarding Psychotropic Drugs and Therapy

    Clinical members of AAMFT were solicited by means of a randomized multi-staged clustering technique to identify their attitudes and beliefs regarding psychotropic drugs. All participants were blind to the overall purpose of the study (n = 322) and were directed to read a clinical vignette and then identify what course of action they would take with the client. They were then asked to complete a small questionnaire regarding their attitudes and beliefs regarding psychotropic drugs. Results of the study showed that 35.7% of the clinicians identified medication and a medication referral as a viable treatment option they might pursue with a client meeting criteria for major depressive episode. Clinicians who reported having a dedicated university class (17.2%) in psychopharmacology were more likely to identify medication referral as a treatment option. However, 80% of the AAMFT clinicians we surveyed reported that they were not adequately trained about psychotropic medications in their graduate programs. Further implications regarding diagnostic practices are also discussed, as 26% of clinicians failed to explicitly diagnose the client in the case vignette with depression

    Five new species of Hydroptila (Trichoptera: Hydroptilidae), H. murtlei sp. n., H. criokera sp. n, H. auriscuspa sp. n., H. santarosa sp. n., and H. ebroensis sp. n., from Florida are described and illustrated. We provide an annotated list of the 76 species known to occur in the state, including 10 species that represent new state records, one of which is also a new country record. New illustrations are presented for those species which were difficult to identify or exhibited new range extensions into Florida, namely: Hydroptila acadia Ross, H. ajax Ross, H. icona Mosely, H. latosa Ross, H. lloganae Blickle, H. maculata (Banks), H. novicola Blickle and Morse, H. wakulla Denning, Oxyethira arizona Ross, O. lumipollex Kelley and Harris, and O. simulatrix Flint
